Our Journey
STORIES IN BLACK (SIB), is an interactive multimedia platform dedicated to giving voice to the coming out experiences of gay Black men, and elevating the narrative of what it means to be Black and gay in America. SIB was founded in July of 2007 during a candid dinner conversation between Eugene Robinson and Ladu Pearson who realized their journey to becoming their authentic selves was one in the same. The transformative experience of sharing their parallel journeys deepened their belief in the power of collective storytelling within the Black gay community, and inspired them to create a safe space for others to share their own stories.
Covering everything from coming out, dating and relationships, and mental health and wellness, this platform supports a growing collective of men who want to highlight the narrative of what it truly means to be Black and gay in America. In addition to its online presence, Stories in Black also provides a safe space and an opportunity to connect with others who share common experiences through a series of discussions and workshops called The BlackOut. Since its creation in 2008, The BlackOut has become a national movement to celebrate and affirm the experiences of Black gay men across the country.
SIB was created with love and built upon a foundation of courage, compassion, and community. No matter where you happen to be in your life’s journey, through our posts, videos, and forums, we aim to encourage and empower you to live more authentically.
